Heraldry discussion?
Jan 8 2010, 8:07 AM EST | Post edited: Jan 8 2010, 8:07 AM EST
In detailing the arms of Sir Kern Tralek and as I'm currently reading George R.R. Martin's delightfully dark "Game of Thrones" series, I wondered if we should (that is, if we haven't already) have a page discussing heraldry and heraldic devices?

It occurs that this might be something for those players running Knight character (in the original sense of the word, not in the "generic fighter of a civilised background" sense) to hang aspect of their characters upon. What does everyone else think?

I'm thinking it should be in the Miscellaneous section? Any other preference anyone? Do you find this valuable?

Howabout in 'The Mundane World' section, in the 'The Lore of Legend'?

Incidentally, I have a heraldry generation article ready that I could put up next week.

"Lore of Legend > Mundane World" sounds like just the ticket, I reckon. Do you find this valuable?

Sorry Tom, should have said that the Discussion page is awaiting your article. We'll see what that kicks off in terms of contributions. It's as good a place to start as I can think of.

I have done an immense amount of work on the Heraldry of Albion for my own campaign - my character Sir Roderick of Pellard who appears in Friends or Foes as the King's Herald has done a great deal of work attempting to standardise the Heraldry of Albion.

I'd like to share it here, but I'm now worried about stepping on other people's toes. It's not entirely compatible with what has already been put on the Wiki. But it is the basis for a now-published character.

(Sir Roderick, by the way, is having an apoplectic fit at the idea of random coats of arms.)

This just gives one example of the type of things I've put together over time on this.

Awesome! Better to post this than not to post - once it's on the Wiki we can all discuss it, yes? Do you find this valuable?

I agree with Jiminy. That work's far too good to sit in the shadows. Post it on here and we can talk it to death in spirited debate! Do you find this valuable?

This is very nice. Please don't let my stuff make you hesitate about putting it on the wiki - my article was only intended as a quick and dirty tool for referees to generate arms for NPC knights in a moment (although I have used it once for a PC knight, where we wanted to generate one in a few minutes so that we could get on with the game). And what I wrote up was hardly exhaustive!

I look at the wiki as a miscellany to pick and choose from, like the old rolemaster companions; I used to pour over them but only ever used a fraction of the ideas there. Reading them was the fun part.

Well, I have posted a chunk of material to the section on heraldry. Begin 'talking it to death'.

I've kept virtually everything that was already there. I like the random table in particular - it gives GMs a way of quickly generating a shield for a new Knight, so players can't work out if they are a random NPC, a one off, or whatever, just by the lack or presence of arms.

By the way, for fun, I worked up a shield for Sir Kern Tosleigh based on the description (doesn't quite fit Roderick's Rules - but is a good example of keeping a design because the 'rule violations' add to the meaning - a white field for purity).

I am happy to do these for any wiki entries anybody thinks they might be useful for. I enjoy it. I can either design myself, or base them on descriptions by other people (modified by the 'rules' with permission and where appropriate).

Sorry Dreadnort, but i can't believe I missed that workup of the Torsleigh arms (although, I must admit that real liufe has gotten in the way of the fun stuff of late...). Thanks a lot for that!
